Community Gardens 2023
Community Garden: 2024 Season Upon assignment of a garden plot, Dan McGrath, Wakefield Recreation Director, will meet with gardeners to review rules and expectations. At any point, gardeners can direct questions and concerns to Dan McGrath at dmcgrath@wakefield.ma.us or 781.246.6389.

Application process. Managed by Wakefield’s Recreation Department, the garden will feature over 40 4’ x 8’ individual plots in J.J. Round Park on Main Street. The space will include rain barrels, direct water access, compost bins, and an equipment shed. Plot applications will be accepted from a maximum of two adults per household. Submissions must be received by 11:59PM on March 31st.

Should applications exceed the number of available plots, Wakefield Recreation will hold a lottery drawing on April 5th. All applicants will be also be notified directly.

Applicants must be a resident of Wakefield, leader of a non-profit organization based in Wakefield, or leader of a business operating in Wakefield.

A $50 per-plot permit fee will be payable upon notification that one has received a plot assignment. If an individual wishes to request a waiver of the permit fee due to financial concerns, he or she can contact Dan McGrath, Recreation Director, at (781) 246-6389 or by email at dmcgrath@wakefield.ma.us

Garden Rules and Regulations
  • Weather permitting, the garden will formally open on April 15th 
  • Permits are valid from April 15th to October 31st and must be renewed annually
  • The garden is open from 8 a.m. to dusk, 7 days a week
  • Abandoned and overgrown plots will be reassigned
  • Only annuals can be planted; no cannabis can be grown
  • Furniture, including chairs, may not be left at plots
  • The following are prohibited on the premises:
  • Herbicides and pesticides
  • Trespassing on others’ plots
  • On-site sale of produce
  • Individual fencing
  • Smoking and vaping
Permit holders are responsible for:
  • Supervising children brought on site
  • Leashing and controlling dogs brought on site
  • Removing litter and debris after each use
  • Clearing plot of all stakes and non-vegetative matter at the end of the season
