Intro to Improv: Learning to Play

This class is a beginner’s introduction to the fundamentals of improvisational comedy. Improv is a great way to bring more play into your life, sharpen your quick-thinking skills, and boost your public speaking confidence. If you've ever dreamed of performing in a live improv comedy show, now's your chance! Learn how to be funny, engaging on stage, and most importantly, have fun!
 
Students will learn the basics of improv, including:
  • The “Yes, and" principle: active listening and building on ideas with proactive agreement.
  • Working as a team and making authentic human connections on stage.
  • Using your voice and body, and exploring a range of human emotions.
  • Making bold, confident choices in the moment.
  • Creating spontaneous scenes and characters on the fly.

Join us for a 6-week session that wraps up with a 15-minute stage performance at Wakefield’s premiere comedy venue: The Albion Cultural Exchange.
 
Class Schedule:
6 Thursdays: January 16th – February 27th, 6:00pm to 7:30pm
(no classes on 1/9, and 2/13 for improv shows, which students are encouraged to attend)
  • Dates: 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/20, 2/27
  • Note: Classes may be pushed back a week or two due to winter weather.
 
Final public performance:
  • A 15-minute slot during the Big Attitude Improv Jam, led by your instructor
  • Date: Sunday, March 9th, 6:00pm

Admission:

About your instructor:
Brian Agosta is a producer, comedian, improviser, singer, and digital design professional living in Wakefield, MA. He is a former cast member of the ImprovBoston Mainstage and National Touring Company, and has performed with musical improv groups Boston’s Unscripted Musical Project and the Chicago-based Baby Wants Candy. His comedy and music performances and teaching have taken him across the country, including Chicago, Alaska, Washington DC, Key West, Miami, New York City, and right around Boston.
 
Brian has trained with ImprovBoston, Improv Asylum, iO Chicago, and renowned singer Rhiannon in improvised singing. He’s taught improv and a cappella, and toured for 2 years with the a cappella group Almost Recess, performing over 500 shows and teaching K-12 students about the harmony and history of vocal music.
 
His commercial acting credits include TV spots for Friendly’s, Meineke, Big Y, Cumberland Farms, Honey Dew, and Wayfair. Brian holds a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Media, Arts and Communications from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 
Currently, he is the creative director and owner of Big Attitude, where he brings fresh entertainment to the North Shore community.
